A LONG procession could be seen winding its way through the village in Farnley Tyas to StŠLucius’ Church when Kirkburton Parish Council’s Civic Service took place earlier this month.

More than 70 guests included the Mayor of Kirklees and civic dignitaries from the councils of Denby Dale, Holme Valley, Meltham, Mirfield, Mossley, Rippenden and Saddleworth.

Past chairmen of Kirkburton and members of the present council were also in attendance along with chairman Clr Robert and Mrs Barraclough’s friends and relatives.

The service was led by the Rev Mildred Butterworth, supported by the Rev Dennis Handley, team rector and bishop’s adviser for farming and rural communities.

Music was provided by Malcolm Cruise, organist and choirmaster of All Hallows’ Church, Almondbury, with members of the united choirs of the team parish.

The readings were by Clr Robert Barraclough and vice-chairman Clr John Hirst.

Clr Barraclough said he was pleased that the service could take place in his home village of Farnley Tyas. He thanked the clergy, choir and all his guests for making the event so special.

The collection in the service and all donations raised during Clr Barraclough’s year of office will go towards the church’s ‘Re-ordering Fund’.
