A Huddersfield cheerleading squad has racked up a staggering 17 trophies at a regional competition.

But the Addicted 2 Dance All Stars, who meet at Base Studios in Huddersfield, were hit by a string of injuries before the competition in Leicester which led to a chaotic build-up to the Spring Open Championship.

A2D Principal Courtney Hamilton said: “The week before we had two girls in hospital and one girl on crutches and another with a hip injury. Our last training session the room was double-booked so we had to train 33 kids in a squash court.

“Then when we got to the competition two girls were taken ill, one with panic attacks and one with stomach pains.

“It was a case of everything that could go wrong did.

“But the girls did a fantastic job. We were one of the only visiting squads from outside the area and really went for it.

“And fortunately the two girls were checked out and found to be alright.”

But it was three-year-old Mia Nelson, of Bradley, who stole the competition with her tiny tumble routine. Courtney added: “The whole audience erupted, she was incredible.”

The squad, which previously trained at Northfield Hall, Brackenhall, is now gearing up for a bigger competition in Blackpool in July which will go more smoothly.

Courtney joked: “We need a bigger trophy cabinet! Hopefully our next trip it will be less dramatic.”
