CROSLAND MOOR

Members of the Crosland Moor Mothers’ Union celebrated Holy Communion in the Lady Chapel of St Barnabas’ Church. The celebrant was the Rev Martin Parrott assisted by server Andrea Rattigan and readings were given by Sheila Jaworski. Afterwards in the parish hall the members held their monthly meeting chaired by the branch leader Joyce Holdsworth. After coffee and a short business session, Mrs Holdsworth introduced the speaker, Stephen Collins, who spoke about his life as a disabled person. Members heard that despite having lived with cerebral palsy all his life, Stephen had led a very full, active and useful life and now ran a mobility equipment business in Brighouse – Lazarusmobility – which caters for every disability. Stephen brought a selection of goods with him and the members were able to buy items ranging from walking sticks and magnifying glasses to larger items including motorised scooters. Stephen was accompanied by Jane Mellor who does secretarial work for him, but has her own business as Efficient PA. Stephen was thanked by Andrea Rattigan for his interesting and inspiring account of his life. The hostesses for the morning were Nancy Jones and Patricia Kaye.

GOLCAR

Mr Ian Day welcomed Mr Andrew Marchington who led the New Years Day Service at Providence Methodist Church Golcar. The theme was Jesus the Light of the World. Abigail helped Andrew to explain the candle and figures in the Nativity. Mrs Margaret Israel was the organist. Fellowship continued in the schoolroom.

LINTHWAITE

Morning worship at Linthwaite Methodist Church tomorrow at 9.30am will be an all-age service led by Rev Jo Archer-Siddall, with the theme of Animals. The congregation is reminded to bring pets or a photo of their favourite animals. All are welcome.

At Christ Church the morning service was led by the Rev Martin Parrott who prayed, celebrated Holy Communion and gave a blessing. A lesson was read by Peter Linsell-Frazer and Margaret McQuillan preached and the organist was Derek Horne. The Rev Martin Parrott led the evening service and gave a blessing. Margaret McQuillan read a lesson and the organist was Rhona Jepson.

LONGWOOD

The festive season at St Mark’s Church continued following the Carols by Candlelight with two services on Christmas Eve. The early evening Christingle service aimed, as usual, at the children was followed in the late evening with the midnight service which was led by Rev Harry Gwinnett.

On the first Sunday of the New Year the Sung Eucharist service was led by Parish Priest, the Canon Martyn Crompton. The organist was Philip Turner and the server for Communion was Chris Jones. A smaller than average congregation sat in the choir stalls by the high altar. Following the greeting by Martyn, the first hymn, Joy to the World, was sung. Bible readings from Numbers and Galatians were by Dorothy Heads and Judith Pearson. In The Bleak Midwinter led to Martyn reading the Gospel according to Luke and he then continued with his sermon in which he described how we should all be considered as children of God. The creed was followed by intercession prayers prepared and presented by Judith Pearson. The sharing of the peace preceded Holy Communion and this led to the final hymn, Angels from the Realms of Glory. The service concluded with Martyn giving the final blessing.

Community ventures in the village in January include LVG coffee morning on today, Saturday, in the Mechanics’ Hall. St Mark’s Monday Club party in the community centre will be held on the 16th and Parkwood community breakfast will be held on Saturday the 21st.

MARSDEN

The Rev Roger Nelson conducted a united service at the United Church on Sunday morning, when members from Linthwaite and Slaithwaite Methodist Churches joined in the service which included Holy Communion. In addition to Mr Nelson's service, Edward Sheldrake read from the Bible. Marjorie Boothroyd was the organist. After the service refreshments were served by Jean Dewdney and Sheila and Carl Butters.

A service of Holy Communion at St Bartholomew’s was held on Sunday, conducted by the vicar, the Rev Geoff Garside. The lesson was read by Jean Pennington. David Corps offered prayers of intercession. Ian Hunt was the organist. Sidesman was Mary Horn. Coffee was served in the hall by Mabel Smithies, Evelyn Laidlaw and Glenys Ward.

MILNSBRIDGE

At the Milnsbridge Christadelphian's on Sunday, following a family tea, Paul Rose was the president at the evening Bible talk. Jesus Is Coming Again was the subject of the talk given by David McEvoy.

On Wednesday January 4 at the Bible class, Andrew Wilkinson presided and visiting speaker David Aaron spoke on the subject Clean And Unclean – Spiritual Lessons.

Next Sunday, January 8, at 6pm, there will be a talk given by Martyn Lawrence of Doncaster about Who Are The Christadelphian's? On Wednesday January 11 at 7.30pm the Bible class subject is Mary – Mother of Jesus. Visitors are always welcome to meetings and talks.

PARKWOOD

Marion Lloyd welcomed the congregation to Parkwood Methodist Church on Sunday morning. The preacher was Naomi Sharp, bible readers were Gareth Beaumont and Gill Ritchie and organist was Kenneth Rothery. Coffee was served after the service by Margaret Noble and Christine Johnson.

SLAITHWAITE

St James Parish Church family service and Holy Communion was led by the Rev Robin Townsend, assisted by Raymond Denton. The Holy Gospel, Luke Chapter 2 from verse 22, and the address Jesus Presented in the Temple were given by the Rev Robin. Prayers were led by Patricia Parkinson. This was followed by the Eucharist and the organist was Granville Brook.
