LONGWOOD

Sung Eucharist on the eighth Sunday morning after Trinity at St Mark’s church was conducted by guest celebrant the Rev Stephen Henry who was introduced, during announcements from churchwarden David Verlander. He also announced that the recent Summer Fayre had raised £281.00 for church funds, and the Monday Club day trip to Bridlington, still had seats available from Dorothy Heads. The organist was Phillip Turner and the clergy procession included server Pat Jessop, the choir and vicar. The Introit hymn Jesus Where Thy People Meet was followed with opening Prayers and Bible readings by Olive Houghton and Dorothy Verlander, from Jeremiah and Corinthians. Before reading The Gospel, Stephen said he had changed the published passage because the day was the Feast Day of St James and it was more appropriate to read from St Luke. For his sermon Stephen concentrated on St James, on his feast day and information about him is difficult to find. James and his brother John were quoted as initially favouring violent tactics, as opposed to Jesus promoting loving each other to maintain peace. Coming up to date and mentioning present day problems, Stephen then referred to problems in the Middle East quoting Shimon Perez promoting love to solve their problems as being more sensible than violence. Following the creed, Margaret Haigh presented intercession prayers which included one for Joe Battye, who passed away last week and who was the local benefactor who, for many years, had provided fresh daffodils to decorate St Mark’s every Easter. At this point leader Joan Morton and the young church joined the service, from Sunday school in time to share the peace. During communion, Stephen was assisted by Pat Jessop, as server, which took the service to a conclusion with the hymn Great is Thy Faithfulness and Stephen giving the final Blessing.
