TEENAGER Ryan Blackburn lost both his paternal grandparents within the space of a few months.

Now the 14-year-old has completed the second of two fundraising efforts in their memory.

Ryan, who lives in Golcar, raised £125 with a 5km sponsored run in memory of his grandfather, George Blackburn, who died last August, aged 82.

He donated the money to Newsome Nursing Home where George, who had Parkinson’s Disease, spent his latter years.

Now Ryan has raised more than £194 for the Stroke Unit at Calderdale Royal Hospital, where his grandmother, Audrey, died last December, two days before her 80th birthday, after suffering a stroke.

Ryan, who attends Colne Valley Specialist Arts College, held a sponsored silence for an entire day to raise the cash.

Mum Karen said losing both grandparents within a few months had been hard on Ryan and he had been determined to raise money in their memory.

She added: : "Keeping quiet all day – from getting up until going to bed and including at school – is quite an achievement because everyone who know Ryan knows he is a real chatterbox.

When we were asking people to sponsor him, they were saying ‘we’ll give you the money now’ and I was saying ‘no’ because I thought I’d end up having to give it back!"
