GOLCAR

Golcar Providence Friendship Group held their fortnightly meeting on Thursday, February 7. Steve Harrison and Annie Deaman spoke and sang about the Yorkshire Textile Industry circa 1800. The speakers were introduced by Mrs Nancy Meadows, and supper was served by Beverley Senior and Doreen Worsley. The annual craft fair will be held on Saturday March 9 from 10am until 3pm.

Mr A Jones led the service at Providence Methodist Church, Golcar and Mr I Day welcomed Mr Jones and the congregation. Mrs C Heeley read from Corinthians chapter 3 and Mr I. Day read from Luke Chapter 9. Miss W Ellis read prayers of intercession. Mrs M Israel was the organist. The Ash Wednesday service at Providence on Wednesday will be led by Curate H Gwynett. A Beetle Drive and Pancake Supperwill be held at Providence this Saturday at 6pm, £2.50 adults, £1 children. Includes supper.

A joint effort by the Golcar Churches saw them hold a coffee morning, pie and pea lunch and auction in St John’s Church, raising £700. Proceeds were for the cost of helping to run Golcar Lily Day on May 11.

“It’s not my Job” was the theme for the Worship in Today’s World service at St John’s Church. Anne Crosland welcomed the congregation and was the leader of the service. Marion Hall gave the bible reading from Luke chapter 10, The Good Samaritan. Margaret Laycock based her talk on being aware of other people’s needs and trying to be helpful in the community. Prayers were led by Maggie Cuss and Ann Norton was the pianist. Sunday Club gave a role play on the morning’s teachings.

LINTHWAITE

Morning worship at Linthwaite Methodist Church was led by Mr Ieuan Jones, whose love of hymns was shown by his choice for the service, in particular Blaenwern, to which those great words by Charles Wesley ‘Love Divine, All loves Excelling’ was sung with great enthusiasm. Ieuan’s theme for the Service was ‘Celebrity fame will come and fade, but Christ’s love lives forever.’ Sue Haigh read from Exodus 34 v 29-35 – Radiant Face of Moses – and John Morrison read from Luke 9 v 28-36 – ‘The transfiguration.’ Morning worship next week will commence at 9.30am and will include Holy Communion led by Rev Jo Archer-Siddall.

Linthwaite Methodist Church Thursday Fellowship welcomed one of its own when Ian Baxter was the speaker. Using the title More Moving Memories Ian entertained the meeting with two films which he had made during 2012. The first featured a holiday in Eastern Europe and the second highlighted his growing interest in 1940's re-enactment weekends. Jan Widdop was in the chair, Jenny Baxter on the piano and refreshments were served by Jackie Calverley and Pauline Ellis. The speaker in two weeks time is Graham Hirst with a talk entitled What’s On Offa and in four weeks the group has an outside visit to Colne Valley Museum at Golcar.

MARSDEN

Morning worship included Holy Communion at the United Church on Sunday morning and was led by Rev Bob Warwicker. The Bible reading from Luke’s Gospel chapter 9 was read by Jean Broome, Chris Cook was the organist. After the service refreshments were served in the hall by Joyce Clapperton and Margaret Kenyon and included pancakes prepared by members of the Junior Church.

MILNSBRIDGE

At the Milnsbridge Christadelphians there was a Bible class on Wednesday February 6. This was led by David McEvoy and the speaker was Barney Norris from Bradford. Delivered Unto Satan was the theme of his talk.

The Sunday services were led by Jonie Barrett and the afternoon talk was given by David McEvoy. The talk at the evening meeting was “The Bible And History In Harmony” given by Jez Kirby.

The planned meetings for the coming week include a coffee morning reading group meeting on Tuesday. On Wednesday at 7.30pm, James Walker is to continue his series of talks on the tribes of Israel- this week the title is “Simeon – The Forgotten Tribe.”

On Sunday February 17 at 6pm the talk will be “Faith Building.” Visitors are always welcome to meetings and services.

SLAITHWAITE

Wendy Blackburn introduced Abby and Helen Allgood and Linda at Slaithwaite Good Companions. Abby spoke about the Eze Spa products and members tried their hand product and hand massage and they also did makeovers using the Eze Spa cosmetics. They were thanked by Wendy and the pianist was Maureen Weaving.

St James’ Parish Church Holy Communion service was led by Rev Robin Townsend, assisted by Raymond Denton and Alison and Simon Parkinson. The lesson from Exodus chapter 34 vs 29-35 “Moses Goes Down from Mount Sinai” was read by Patricia Parkinson. The Holy Gospel from St Luke Chapter 9 vs 28-36 “The Transfiguration and the Glory of Jesus” and the address were given by Rev Robin. Prayers were led by Raymond Denton and the organist was Alvi Whitehead.

Please note the morning service will start from February 17 at the new time of 10.30am with a new family friendly Holy Communion service.

Wendy Blackburn was in the chair for the Wesley Guild Literacy section meeting on Thursday evening. She introduced Peter Armitage of Marsden who entertained with a talk “The end to Buckingham Palace” and talked on the panto he is working on at the present. Supper was served by the rota ladies.

The Rev Jo Archer-Siddall led Sunday morning worship at the Methodist church. The Ten Commandments followed by verses from Deuteronomy and Matthew by Holton Crowther. The theme of her sermon was that we search the corners of our minds. The service included Holy Communion.
