The Rev Susan Askey conducted the parish communion service at St John’s Church. Bible readings were by Roger Hanson from Nehemiah ( Ezra reads the law), Betty Taylor from One Corinthians 12 (One body Many Parts) and Margaret Laycock gave the gospel reading from Luke 4 ( Jesus Rejected At Nazareth). Susan based her address on the three readings. Prayers were led by Anne Crosland and Ann Norton was the organist. Sunday Club talked abut Jesus the carpenter and the important jobs other people do. Sunday Youths’ theme was from Corinthians 12, One Body Many Parts But All Working Together.

LINTHWAITE

Barry Lee led morning worship at Linthwaite Methodist Church last Sunday with readings from Nehemiah 8 v1-10 by Lesley Baxter, and Luke 4 v14-21 by Hilary Baxter. On the first Sunday of Poverty and Homelessness week, Barry spoke about the number of times poverty is mentioned in the Bible, and how some people are still living in extreme poverty today – and he challenged the congregation to ‘make a difference,’ by passing on the message.

MILNSBRIDGE

At the Milnsbridge Christadelphians, the Bible class on Wednesday was led by Paul Rose. The speaker was Kevin Charlesworth. His subject was The Heavens Declare The Glory Of The Lord, which was based on Psalm 19. The Sunday services were led by David McEvoy the talk at the afternoon service was given by Kevin Waterhouse. The evening talk Come And Learn About The Afterlife was presented by Martin Spencer. The planned meetings this week include Coffee Morning Bible Reading Group which meets this morning at 10.30am. Tomorrow at 7.30pm the Bible Class subject will be Ephraim Who Turned Back. Next Sunday at 6pm the subject will be Fascinating Facts About The Jews. Visitors are welcome to join all meetings and services.

PARKWOOD

Marion Lloyd welcomed the congregation to Parkwood Methodist Church on Sunday morning. Guest preacher was Ian Spencer, the pianist was Rhianydd Booth. Coffee was served after the service by Audrey Holdsworth and Margaret Noble.

SLAITHWAITE

The Women’s Fellowship held their first meeting of 2013. Bessie Whitwam was in the chair and led prayers. She introduced the Rev Jo Archer-Siddal who led a general discussion on how others see us as Christians and Christian items that are currently in the news. This was a happy and lively afternoon.

The January Ecumenical service was held at St James’ Church Slaithwaite, led by the Rev Mike Smith of Marsden. Open prayers were said for the people of the valley and the wider world. Fellowship was enjoyed prior to the service.

Mr Byron Lockwood of Almondbury led Sunday morning service at the Methodist Church. Maria Wybrew read from Psalm 36 and Betty Robshaw the gospel reading from John 2 – Jesus changes the water into wine – and this was the theme of Byron’s sermon. Rachel Wybrew accompanied the hymns on violin.

St James Parish Church Holy Communion service was led by the Rev Robin Townsend, assisted by Raymond Denton. The lesson from Joshua chapter 23 – Joshua's farewell address – was read by Simon Parkinson. The Holy Gospel St Luke, chapter 4 from verse 14, Jesus is rejected at Nazareth and the address about promises were given by the Rev Robin who also led the prayers. The organist was Alvi Whitehead.
