CROSLAND MOOR
Members of the Crosland Moor Mothers' Union met in the Lady Chapel of St Barnabas’ Church for their monthly service of Holy Communion. The celebrant was Canon Stephen Henry, assisted by server Andrea Rattigan. The Bible readings were given by Alwyn Hallas. Afterwards in the Parish Hall, members were served with coffee and then held a lengthy business meeting chaired by the branch leader Valerie Donoghue. The hostesses for the morning were Elaine Broadley and Nancy Jones.
In the afternoon, nine members attended Christ Church, Linthwaite, for the Linthwaite Mothers’ Union annual festival. Sadly it was also the final festival as Linthwaite Mothers’ Union officially closed down. The banner was carried at the start of the service and laid down in front of the altar at the end of the service, it will always still be kept in the church.
LINTHWAITE
Sue Howard led All Age Worship at Linthwaite Methodist Church, with the theme of ‘What is a Name?’ referring to how God is known by many names – Father, Redeemer, Messiah etc comparing it to how we are known to various friends, relatives and associates. Hilary Baxter read alternative lines from Psalm 23 ‘The Lord is My Shepherd’, with Sue, who was reading from a Red Indian version of the same reading. During the Service the Young People drew shields which depicted the many names God is known by. Ed Archer led the prayers of intercession which were closely linked to the theme of the service.
MARSDEN
Liz Bishop led worship at the Marsden United Church on Sunday morning and the theme of her sermon was ‘The Olympics.’ Barry Biltcliffe gave a Bible reading and the organist was Marjorie Boothroyd. Refreshment were served afterwards by Joyce Firth and Angela Kinder.
A service of Sung Eucharist was held at St Bartholomew's on Sunday, led by the vicar, the Rev Geoff Garside. The Gospel from John 6 v11-21 was read by the vicar, who also preached the sermon and offered prayers. The readings from 2 Kings 4 v42 to end and Ephesians 3 v14 to end were read by Carolyn Hansom. Ian Hunt was the organist.
Sideswomen were Joan Bradbury and Dorothy Lodge. Coffee was served by Christine Garside and Jenny Mitchell. Today a Eucharist Service will be held at 9.30am in the Lady Chapel. Tomorrow there will be Bible Study at the vicarage at 2pm. Please bring your own Bible. Everyone is welcome.
MILNSBRIDGE
At the Milnsbridge Christadelphians, the Bible class on Wednesday July 25 was led by James Walker. The speaker Timothy Goswell gave a presentation on ‘Goats in Scripture’. The Sunday services were led by David McEvoy, with Sarah Barrett the organist. An exhortation on ‘Prayer’ was given by Kevin Charlesworth at the afternoon service. ‘Jesus is Coming – Ready or Not’ was the subject for the evening talk, given by James Walker. Many of the older Sunday School scholars came to listen to the talk. The arrangements for the coming week are that today the coffee morning reading group will meet, to read and discuss the Bible readings for the day. The subject for the Bible class at 7.30pm tomorrow will be ‘The Law Before Moses’. The subject at the evening meeting this coming Sunday at 6pm will be ‘Is a Good Life Good Enough?’ Visitors are most welcome to Christadelphians’ meetings and talks.
PARKWOOD
A garden party was held at the home of Joe and Freda Lloyd on Saturday with stalls and refreshments. Proceeds are for Parkwood Methodist Church and a charity. Marion Lloyd welcomed the congregation to Parkwood Methodist Church on Sunday morning. Guest preacher was Mrs Christine Shaw assisted by Sandra McSweeney and the pianist was Naomi Sharp and steward Elaine Oldham. A faith lunch was held after the service prepared by the ladies of the church.
POLE MOOR
Riders dressed up to raise money for two charities. Pole Moor Riding Club members took part in the fancy dress event in aid of Kirkwood Hospice and the Mare and Foal Sanctuary. They collected £176 for the good causes by visiting pubs and cafes in Slaithwaite as well as the Rose and Crown at Cop Hill and the Jack O’Mitre and Lower Royal George at Pole Moor. Fancy dress winners were: 1 Micha Bradley riding Domino, 2 Jane Livingstone and Taz, 3 Jane England and Daisy, 4 Sarah Morris and Mollie, 5 Bev Schofield and Rosie, 6 Leanne Hey and Penny. SLAITHWAITE
The Methodist Bible group met on Monday evening last. Members read Matthews Gospel chapter 14 jointly and discussion followed on the feeding of the 5,000. Gordon Ellis led the meeting.
Mrs Irene Brawn, of Dalton, was the preacher at the Sunday morning service. Her call to worship was ‘God is Here – Waiting for Us’. Maureen Weaving read the Old Testament lesson from Kings 2 chapter 4 and Hilton Crowther from John’s Gospel chapter 6 and the theme of Irene's sermon was the bread of life. The organist was Roger Mitchell.
Members of Slaithwaite Good Companions visited the home of secretary Maureen Weaving for a cream tea and quiz and chance to look at her lovely garden on a lovely sunny afternoon. She was thanked by Bessie Whitwam.
St James Parish Church Holy Communion service was led by the Rev Robin Townsend, assisted by Raymond Denton. The lesson, Psalm 145 from verse 10 ‘A Hymn of Praise’, was read by Patricia Parkinson. St John Chapter 6 ‘The Feeding of the 5,000’ and the address and prayers were led by the Rev Townsend and the organist was Alvy Whitehead.
