GOLCAR

Mrs Christine Heeley welcomed preacher Adrian Burton and the congregation to Sunday worship at Providence Methodist Church. Granville Brook played the organ. Bible readings were given by Barbara Armitage, from Isaiah chapter 61, verses 1-3. Mrs C Heeley read from Acts Chapter 9, verses 32 - 43.

A joint service for churches together in Golcar will be held at Providence Methodist Church, Golcar , on Sunday at 10.30am. Coffee evening Thursday 7.30-9pm for McMillan.

LINTHWAITE

Ian Baxter was the speaker at Linthwaite Methodist Church Thursday Fellowship. A member of the church all his life, he showed a selection of slides from his vast collection, with no picture being less than 50 years old. Members of the Fellowship have long memories and they enjoyed recalling many happy occasions from the life of the church. Jackie Calverley was the chairlady and Margaret Moriarty played the piano. Refreshments were served by Jennifer Hirst and Christine Hyde. The speaker in two weeks’ time is Rev Ann Sherratt and her talk is entitled UFO.

The Superintendent Minister of the Huddersfield Circuit Rev David Bidnell, led worship at Linthwaite Methodist Church. Preaching from Luke’s Gospel, the Parable of the Dishonest Manager, and Roald Dahl’s poem about the Three Little Pigs, he made the congregation think about relationships with other people, and how God made everyone to be different. Linda Nuttall played the organ and Peter Stead operated the AV system.

The Methodist Women in Britain Huddersfield Circuit Harvest Thanksgiving Service will be at Gledholt Methodist Church today at 2pm.

MARSDEN

The service at the United Church on Sunday was led by local preacher Jez Hackett. The service was a mixture of modern and traditional worship, with two new hymns for the congregation to explore. The first was The Way That You See by Big Ministries; Jez used British Sign Language, which the congregation learnt and joined in. The traditional hymn What A Friend We Have In Jesus was reworked by Pete James and has an additional chorus and music led by Jez playing guitar. Marjorie Boothroyd played the organ for the remaining hymns and accompanied the silences during prayers with meditative music. The theme of the service was how God's church should live and the sermon contained four major challenges for the congregation to think about on how they can help the Church to be:1. A Learning church 2. A loving Church 3. A Worshipping Church 4.An Evangelistic Church. Readings were from Matthew 28 and Acts 2 read by Margaret Casson and Jean Broome.

On Sunday at St Bartholomew’s the congregation welcomed the Rev Janet Sergeant to lead service of Sung Eucharist. David Fisher read the lessons from Jeremiah 8 and 1 Timothy 2 v 1-7. Geoffrey Holroyd read the Gospel from Matthew 25 - the parable of the talents. The Junior Church then acted this parable in church after their activities in the hall. Prayers were led by Geoffrey Holroyd. Jon Robinson was the organist. Sideswomen were Jean Pennington, Cynthia Batley and Audrey Armitage. Coffee was served by the Junior Church Dads. Service today is at 9.30am in the Lady Chapel.

On Saturday a cheese and wine event was held at the Vicarage hosted by the Vicar and his wife. Proceeds for church funds. On Saturday September 28 there will be Autumn Luncheon in the hall.

MILNSBRIDGE

At Milnsbridge Christadelphians’ Bible class on Wednesday evening, Andrew Walker from Doncaster gave a talk on “The man clothed in Linen.” The class was led by Giovanni Marsella.

There was a special morning meeting on Sunday to incorporate the youth weekend. The Sunday meetings were led by Jeremy Kirby with guest Richard Alleyne from Handsworth. His subject at the morning meeting was Follow Jesus.

The coffee morning Bible reading group will meet on Tuesday. The subject at the Wednesday Bible class commencing at 7.30pm will be Introduction to the book of Ruth. On Sunday at 6pm the lecture title will be “What is the purpose of life?”

PARKWOOD

A drop in lunch was held on Wednesday at Parkwood Methodist Church organised by Elaine Oldham, assisted by ladies of the church. A table tennis tournament was held on Friday evening at Parkwood Methodist Church with the Scouts and leaders taking part plus refreshments, assisted by ladies of the church. Proceeds were for the multi faith centre Touchstone. A Harvest Festival service was held at Parkwood Methodist Church on Sunday morning with all the uniformed organisations taking part with their leaders. The preacher was John Oldham assisted by Elaine Oldham, the organist was John Orton and coffee was served after the service by ladies of the church. Harvest gifts were shared between senior members of the church and Huddersfield Mission.

SLAITHWAITE

The Women’s Fellowship was on Tuesday afternoon. Bessie Whitwam was in the chair and led prayers. She introduced Christine Knowles and Margaret Atkinson who gave a talk on the working life of a magistrate followed by questions and answers. Maureen Weaving was the pianist.

The Sunday morning service at the Methodist Church was led by Mrs Liz Bishop of Linthwaite. Shirley Scott read verses from Amos. Liz read the passage of the shrewd manager from Luke 16 and a sketch on this parable was read by Gordon Ellis and Marjorie Crowther. The organist was Roger Mitchell.

Slaithwaite Good Companions enjoyed a Yorkshire Day out in James Herriot country, calling first in Ripon where courier David told of the history of the various places visited. There were stops at Leyburn then Redmire and Middleham, then lunch at Simonstone Fall for an excellent carvery. The group then followed the route of the coming Tour de France stage 1 and the final stop was in Grassington before home. Patricia Parkinson thanked the courier for an informative day and Maureen Weaving for organising another super day out.

Several members of St James’ Parish Church, visited Parcevall Hall near Appletreewick for a parish weekend led by the Rev Robin Townsend for study, worship and relaxation and excellent food. They also celebrated the special birthday of Jean Clayton, one of the Rev Robin’s church wardens.

St James Parish Church holy communions service was led by the Rev Marion Russell assisted by Raymond Denton. The holy gospel Luke chapter 16 verses 1-14, The Parable of the Shrewd Manager. The address was led by Marion Russell and also the prayers. The organist was Alvi Whitehead.
