GOLCAR

On November 7 Golcar Providence Friendship Group held their meeting and the speaker was Mrs Dot Foster. The talk was based on Humorous Poetry, and was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. The chairperson was Mrs Maureen Firth and supper was provided by Mrs Ann Wignall and Mrs Joan Knott. On Wednesday November 20 there will be a Great Providence Bake Off starting at 7.30pm. There will be many cake samples and also cakes to buy.

The Remembrance Sunday service at Providence Methodist Church was led by Mrs Laura Tunnacliffe. Mr Ian Day welcomed Laura, and the congregations of Providence and Golcar Baptist to Sunday worship. Mrs Margaret Israel was the organist. Mrs Gwen Iredale and Mr Ian Day read the lessons from Ecclesiastes chapter 3: verses 1-8, Matthew chapter 5, verses 3-12. Two minutes’ silence was held and then followed a reading from Laura, Mrs Gillian Beevers and Ian. Laura’s theme was "A time for everything". Fellowship continued in the schoolroom over coffee.

This weekend is the last chance to see an exhibition of photographs by local photographer Andy Leader. Andy has taken pictures of the Pennine hills around Holmfirth for 20 years. Andy’s Catch the Light exhibition will be on show at Colne Valley Museum on between 2pm and 5pm.

LINTHWAITE

Methodist Minister Rev John Hayes was the speaker at Linthwaite Methodist Church Thursday Fellowship. His interesting talk about a working holiday spent in Sri Lanka was illustrated by slides. Known as the Tear Drop of India, Sri Lanka has a population of 25 million people and many problems. Along with his wife and daughter, John worked on a project to improve the lives of women and children on the East Coast. Margaret Tennant welcomed John from the chair and Margaret Moriarty played the piano. Hilary Baxter and Jennifer Hirst were in charge of refreshments.

The meeting in two weeks’ time will be the annual lunch and members were asked to meet at the Church for lifts to the Golcar Lily, where lunch would be served at 1pm.

Members of the uniformed clubs, Beavers, Cubs, Scout and Explorers were represented at the Remembrance Day Service held at Linthwaite Methodist Church. Rev Ann Sherratt led worship on the theme of Peace and Love. The reading from Matthew 5 v43-48 ‘Love your Enemies,’ was read by Scout Heather Breid. George Barker, Richard Lloyd and Jay Drinkwater led the Remembrance prayers which they had written. Rev Ann showed photos and talked about her recent visit to where the Atomic bomb landed in Hiroshima, and showed photos of the Peace Garden. The Scouts had spent the previous night sleeping in the cold Church building, so that they could experience a little of how it felt being a refugee.

On Tuesday November 19 there will be a ladies evening at Broad Oak Bowling Club, Linthwaite where Oriflame cosmetics and other gifts will be on sale from 7.30pm. For tickets and more information contact Mairi MacKay on 852300.

MARSDEN

Morning Worship for Remembrance Sunday at The United Church was led by Mr David Joyce. He spoke to the children about what we remember. After the children left for Junior Church there was a time of remembrance when Barrie Biltcliffe read In Flanders Fields and spoke the words:”They shall not grow old”, after which there was a two minutes’ silence observed at 11am. John Dewdney read from Job and Mr. Joyce spoke about remembering after which Kathleen Jackson read from Matthew 25 – the parable of the five wise girls and the five foolish girls. Mr. Joyce continued his theme asking the question, Are You Prepared? Later prayers of Intercession were led by Edward Sheldrake. The organist was Chris Cook and Ruth and Edward Sheldrake served tea and coffee in the Hall after the service. At noon there was a service of Infant Baptism when Rev Ann Sheldrake, Minister, baptised Olivia Jayne Clayton daughter of Jonathan and Jayne.

A short service of remembrance was held at the Duke of Wellington’s Memorial Cross on Pule Hill on Saturday morning. The service was led by the Rev Ann Sherratt and a wreath of poppies was laid at the cross and two minutes’ silence was observed.

A service of Holy Eucharist was held at St Bartholomew’s on Sunday, led by the vicar, the Rev Geoff Garside. The reading from the Bible was by David Fisher. The Gospel from Luke 20 verses 27-38 was by Geoffrey Holroyd. Prayers were led by Christine Garside. Jon Robinson was the organist. Sideswomen were Joan Bradbury, Alison Gibson and Jean Pennington. Coffee was served by Joan Bradbury and Mabel Smithies.

After the service at the Cenotaph in Marsden Park a service of Remembrance was held in Church. During the first hymn colours of the uniformed organisations were paraded to the nave. The reading was by Christine Garside and prayers were offered by Susan Everill. The vicar gave the sermon. After the service the parade reformed and marched back to the Royal British Legion. Marsden Silver Prize Band led the processions and played the hymns in church.

Today (Tuesday) service in the Lady Chapel at 9.30am.

On Saturday November 30 there will be a Christmas Fayre in the hall. Doors open 10.30am. Stalls, refreshments and lunches available.

MILNSBRIDGE

Milnsbridge Christadelphians’ coffee morning Bible reading group met on Tuesday morning to read and discuss the Bible readings allocated for the day. At the Bible class on Wednesday evening, Pete Barrett led the meeting and Minder Paul from Huddersfield gave a talk on “The legitimacy of Christ.” The Sunday services were led by Martin Spencer and the talk at the afternoon service was given by Paul Rose. The speaker at the evening service was Kevin Waterhouse whose subject was “ The gift of God.” The Sister’s class will meet on Tuesday evening at 7.30pm, when Josie Walker from Doncaster will be the speaker. At the Bible class on Wednesday evening there will be the showing of a DVD.

On Sunday November 17 at 6pm, the subject at the evening talk will be “The Bible & science.” All are welcome to attend meetings and services.

PARKWOOD

A pleasant Wednesday afternoon meeting was held at Parkwood Methodist Church. Dorothy Heads spoke on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. In the chair was Jean Johnson and pianist was Nora Beaumont. Refreshments were by Margaret Noble and Pat Battye.

Marion Lloyd welcomed the congregation to Parkwood Methodist Church on Sunday morning to a Remembrance Service. Guest preacher was Mrs Wendy Blackburn and bible readers Joe and Freda Lloyd. Pianist was Christine Walker. Coffee was served after the service by Reene Wyatt and Audrey Holdsworth.

A drop in lunch will be held on Wednesday at Parkwood Methodist church and a community breakfast on Saturday morning, Nov 16, 9.30am-noon.

SLAITHWAITE

Pat Parkinson introduced Jill Bond of Satellite Arts and Moira of Hoot, who spoke to Slaithwaite Good Companions about Singin’ Slawit. Jill said that no-one needed to be able to read music and were taught by ear. Members then did warm up exercises in how to breathe correctly and she then told members the words to sing and the tune. Singing together and in harmony proved a fun afternoon. These sessions are promoted by Kirklees and held weekly at the Watershed, Bridge Street, for people in the Colne Valley over 55. Tuesdays 10am-noon, £3 inc refreshments.

At St James Parish Church, a service for Remembrance was led by Rev Robin Townsend, assisted by Raymond Denton. The music was by Slaithwaite Brass Band and the organist was Alvi Whithead. Councillor David and Mrs Ridgeway and Colne Valley Lions attended and there was a wonderful turnout by the uniformed organisations. The lesson from John chapter 15 vs 9-17 “Jesus the True Vine” was read by Cynthia Hooper. Prayers were led by Raymond, and the address by Rev Robin. Then came the laying of wreaths at the church memorial. This was followed by the act of remembrance, the Lord’s Prayer and the national anthem and the blessing. With Slaithwaite Brass Band and the uniformed groups and Raymond bearing the church cross, Rev Robin and the congregation processed to the war memorial where many wreaths were laid. Then followed the acts of remembrance and tributes to the fallen.
