The candlelit carol service on Christmas Eve at St George’s Church was conducted by Dean Henry Stapleton. The church choir sang When Christ Was Born and the Shepherd’s Cradle Song. The choir from Brockholes School sang Twas On A Starry Night. Verena Wood was the pianist. The readers were Jenny and Tony Parkin, Sue King, George Kaye and Paul Coleman. Noel Clark was the organist.
Christmas communion at St George’s Church was celebrated by Dean Henry Stapleton, who spoke about the symbolism of the different figures in a crib scene. John Roberts read the lesson and Roger Kenworthy was the server. The organist was Verena Wood.
Parish communion on Sunday at St George’s Church was led by the Rev Jenny Barnes, who spoke about being inspired by the Holy Spirit. Roger Kenworthy was the server and Verena Wood was the organist.
Granville Dews led worship at Brockholes Methodist Church on Christmas Day. The organist was Mr Noel Clarke and Paul Jackson played the guitar and sang.
On Christmas Eve, a crib service at St David’s Church was led by the Rev Nick Heaton. More than 150 people attended the service with children dressed as shepherds, angels and kings. The pianist was Eddie Purcell.
Midnight mass at St David’s Church was conducted by the Rev Geoff Bamford. Lessons were read by Judith Roberts and Ian Macdonald, who also administered the chalice. Intercessions were led by Carolyn Burley and the organist was Jean Chadwick.
On Christmas Day, family communion at St David’s Church was led by the Rev Nick Heaton when the organist was Jean Chadwick. Midweek morning communion at was conducted by the Rev Geoff Bamford. Friday evening prayers were led by Ian Gold. The Rev Di Ellerton conducted family Eucharist on Sunday when lessons were read by Margaret Tupling and Glynnis Askew. Intercessions were led by Ian Gold, who also administered the chalice. The organist was Jean Chadwick.
Parish Eucharist at St Mary’s Church was led by the Rev Jenny Barnes. Graham Wardman read the lesson and intercessions were led by Jane and Graham Wardman. The server was Pauline Adams and Clive Waind assisted with the chalice. The organist was Jean Cheeseman.
The Rev Tim Moore led the Sacrement of the Lord’s Supper and the joint service at the Methodist Church with other Churches on Sunday December 30. Marina and Norman Kelly welcomed the congregation at the door and Julia Noble played the organ . The reading by Margaret Hill was from Isaiah 40 v1-5. Coffee, tea and biscuits were served by Christine Lockwood and helpers.
On Christmas Eve afternoon, a Christingle and Nativity Service were held at St John’s Church, Upperthong. The service was led by the Rev Di Ellerton and a collection raised £400 for the Children’s Society. Later, the Rev Di Ellerton conducted midnight mass when the readers were Les Hopkins and Graham Dawson. Sue Dawson assisted with the chalice and John Orton was the organist. The Christmas Day morning Eucharist service was led by the Rev Di Ellerton when the reader was Sue Legge. The Rev Di Ellerton led the Sunday morning service at St John’s Church when the readers were Les Hopkins and Karen Beattie. Sue Dawson led prayers and assisted with the chalice. Adam Greenhalgh was the organist.
Trevor Jones led the Christmas Day service at Wooldale Methodist Church when the organist was Nigel Morris.
The services over the Christmas period at the Methodist Free Church were led Roy Horn on Dec 23, and Elaine Hale on Christmas Eve, the organists were Peter Coldwell and Colin Hudson respectively. The last Sunday service of the year was led by Janet Blackshaw and the reading was by Margaret Tinker. Janet in her talk spoke of the happy events through the year that we have enjoyed as a nation and then she talked of the importance of Christmas and that it hadn’t ended yet and we should get excited about Christmas like the children do because it is a very important part of the Christian calendar. The organist was Peter Coldwell and Sylvia Jordan played a piano piece to close the service.
