Parish Communion at St George’s Church, Brockholes was led by Dean Henry Stapleton, who spoke about Advent. Dean Henry invited chorister Sophie Knox to light the fourth advent candle. Beth Dove read the lesson and Rosalind Watt was the server.Verena Wood played the organ.

About 120 people sang around the Christmas tree at Brockholes Methodist Church. Refreshments were served in the church and £234 was raised for charity.

Mrs Kath Beetlestone led the service last Sunday at Brockholes Methodist Church. The organist was Mr Robert Booth. The fourth advent candle was lit and refreshments were served after the service.


Three’s Company, a meeting for the elderly, held a Christmas Singalong organised by Carolyn Burley.

The Over 60s Club held a Christmas Lunch in the church room. Midweek Holy Communion at St David’s Church, Holmbridge, was led by the Rev Nick Heaton. Lessons were read by Ian Gold. This was followed by the Monkey Business Christmas Party and a visit from Father Christmas. A free Christmas lunch was also held. Friday evening prayers were led by the Rev Geoff Bamford.

Sunday morning parish Eucharist at St David’s Church was conducted by the Rev Nick Heaton.. Lessons were read by Judith Roberts and Sally Darley. Intercessions were led by the Rev Nick Heaton and the chalice was administered by Ian Gold. The organist was Jean Chadwick.

A Carol service at St Davis’s Church was led by the Rev Geoff Bamford and the Rev Nick Heaton. The choir was conducted and accompanied by Jean Chadwick.


Carol singing was the main focus of activities for folk at Holmfirth Methodist Church last week. On Tuesday evening a group sang in the Pioneer supermarket, raising money for Christian Aid. The Thursday coffee morning was held in church when more than 70 people enjoyed coffee and mince pies round tables while singing carols and joining in Christmas worship led by Kath Beetlestone. On Friday evening members offering Coffee on the Bridge to revellers sang carols for more than an hour and on Sunday evening members enjoyed a Service of Carols and Readings in Church.

Sunday morning worship was led by Terry Frost, who interspersed a powerful message with his usual humour. Bible readings were by Alison Denton and Kimm Brook, and the prayers of intercession were written and read by the worship team leader, Andrew Denton. In Terry’s address he quoted from Denis Kilcommons’ recent column in the Examiner – Christmas Is By Its Name A Celebration Of The Birth Of Christ. Terry reminded the congregation to celebrate the real meaning of Christmas and to remember Jesus among all the presents, food and excitement. After the service refreshments were served in the Community Room. This Sunday there will be section services at Scholes and Honley Trinity both at 10.30am, there will be no services at Holmfirth Methodist Church that day.


Members of Honley Probus Club held their annual carol service, led by the Rev Tim Moore. Lessons were read by Clive Green, Maurice Harper, Leslie Chadwick and Clive Waind. Brian Winterbottom sand the solos accompanied by Vernon Briggs. After the service members and wives enjoyed the annual Christmas lunch at Meltham Golf Club. One of the guests-of-honour was Holmfirth Rotary Club president Michael Dove accompanied by his wife,Memebrs of St Mary’s Mothers and Toddlers Group held their Christmas party in the church organised by Tracey Quarmby and Emily Smith. The party concluded with a visit by Santa Claus, who handed out presents.

On Friday evening at the St Mary’s Church Carol Service was held led by Dean Henry Stapleton. The nine lessons were read by representatives of church groups. Musical items were given by the choir and the music group. The organist was Vernon Briggs.

On the Sunday before Christmas a service of Holy Communion was held at St Mary’s Church, led by the Rev Judy Kenworthy. Liz Pearson was the organist. Kim Howe assisted at the alter and Louise Brook read the lessons. The fourth candle of the Advent wreath was lit by Margaret Trayte as we remember God’s favourite servant Mary, mother of Jesus. There will be no service at St Mary’s on Sunday, December 30th as the congregation will be sharing in a united service at St James, Meltham Mills at 10am.
