BROCKHOLES

Brockholes Women’s Institute met last Thursday in the Methodist Church parlour, when the speaker was Geoffrey Lawson on Transport Of Delight. Geoffrey gave a brief history of how his career developed on the railways, starting as a teenager from school, then 18 months in the RAF and back to becoming one of the youngest Station Masters. He eventually was Area Manager and Station Master at Huddersfield during the 1970s. As Station Master he met the Queen as she arrived at Huddersfield Station by train to open the new M 62 Motorway and Scammonden Reservoir. He continued to have a successful career on the railways until his retirement. His talk was punctuated with newspaper reports and photographs. Dorothy Jones thanked the speaker for a very interesting inside view of the railways of our area. This was followed with Resolutions discussion, plant stall and a faith supper. This month’s competition – a railway picture – was won by Zita Crossley

The service took the form of a special thanksgiving for the adults and children who have made the AD Group so successful. Rejoice in the Lord was the message of a reading by Dorothy Coldwell. Dean Henry read from St Mark’s Gospel the story of the gardener who planted seeds and in his sermon Dean Henry compared the development of the seeds with the development of AD over the years. Susan Clay explained what happens in AD and the children brought in posters to explain their involvement in various activities. The children sang Life is a Wonderful Thing. Before the Eucharist, 10 children held lighted candles for the AD birthday cake. Following the services, refreshments, including birthday cake, were served. The sidespeople were Mr and Mrs Coldwell.
