Terry Frost took the Sunday church service, speaking to the young people about ‘family’, having recently received a copy of his family tree. He talked about how much things have changed since he was young – especially school and how he was treated by teachers. He said we are the family of God and read from Galatians 6 verses 2-5. Terry showed some of his ties, his favourite being a golfing tie with a motto ‘try and do better’.The service next week will be taken by Malcolm Jacob.

The village hall Lunch Club on Thursday October 31 will be serving beef stew in Yorkshire pudding followed by fruit pie.

There will be a Halloween party at 6.30pm on Thursday October 31 for parents and children.

A bonfire with fireworks will be held on Tuesday November 5 at 6.30pm. Free entry and food will be available.

Take That 2 will be performing on stage in the hall on Saturday December 7 on Ladies Xmas Night. Tickets are £11 pre-booked only on 604289. Doors open from 7pm; food and bar available. For information about events at the hall see the web site www.birdsedgevillagehall.co.uk or ring 604289.

Due to popular demand another Beetle Drive will be held on Saturday November 2 from 6.30pm. Light supper at half time and bar throughout. Adults £2, children £1; finishing time is usually around 8pm. Christmas cards are now available.

CLAYTON WEST

Morning worship at the Methodist Church was a service of Holy Communion led by Rev Richard Thompson. He told the full story of the life of Jacob, sustained by God, in all its good and difficult times. A reading from the gospel of Luke was given by Maxine Lodge, who also assisted at communion. Stewards were Betty Booth and Joan Bond. Flowers for the communion table were given by Ida Brooke. After the service Lucie Froggatt served coffee and biscuits.

Last Saturday the coffee morning was held. Stalls included home made cakes, books, and Traidcraft with Christmas gifts and cards, all were popular. Bacon sandwiches were cooked and served by Lucie Froggatt. Proceeds were for church funds and Traidcraft.

EMLEY

Sunday’s Worship for All with Holy Communion service at St Michael’s considered the value and need for some of us to make lists, illustrated by the passage from Paul’s second letter to Timothy, where Paul, from his chained situation in prison, lists the ways in which Timothy and all Christian followers should use the teachings of Jesus and the Good News to spread the word of salvation. We were encouraged to use our lists to remind us to talk about Jesus to at least one person each day in order to share the gospel message.

There was an evening service of worship this week based on the different faces of the world, from its beauty to its great needs and pains.

There will be a service of Holy Communion at 7pm on Tuesday; Holy Communion on Wednesday at 9am followed by coffee in church; with “Tuesday @ 2” for babies, toddlers and their carers. There will be no youth groups this week or next, as the Youth Team have a well-earned rest. There is also Coffee Morning on Monday from 10.30am.

The course “Moving On” continues on Tuesday at 8pm in church for those who want to find out more about their faith as well as for those who are thinking about confirmation. The six-week course on rediscovering mission and re-imagining church, on Thursdays at 7.30pm at St Thomas’s Church, Bradley will resume this week, October 24. Both courses have been well attended, but there is still room for anyone who wants to join the groups.

Next Sunday’s Holy Communion service will be at 9.15am. There will be no evening service. The All Souls’ Service, when departed relatives and friends are remembered will be on Sunday November 3 in the afternoon.

SHELLEY

At last Thursday’s meeting of Shelley Over 60s in the village hall, the bingo line was won by Barry Jessop and the full house by Margaret Dunning. The prize for the first three numbers on one card was won by Maureen Dearnley. The whist high of 94 was won by John Walker and the low of 61 went to Greta Hinchliffe from nine tables. There were four birthdays to celebrate this week – Gordon Burgin, Geoff Harrison, Olwyn Berry and Doris Summerton. Raffle prizes were won by Barry Jessop, Eunice Ramsden, Robin Small, Margaret Haigh and Peter Atkinson.

On Tuesday October 15, a group of members enjoyed a lovely meal and marvellous entertainment at Rivington Barn. Thanks go to the staff and to those who organised the trip.

SHEPLEY

Members of Shepley Methodist Church raised £700 when they held a coffee morning for Macmillan Nurses.

Members of the Methodist Church joined with St Paul’s Church on October 13 for a harvest service at The Black Bull when the dried and tinned goods were collected by Karen Selley, manager of the Welcome Centre in Huddersfield, who explained the work of the centre.

The Sunday service at the Methodist Church was led by Mr B Lee. The readers were Pauline Taylor and John Mann, dealing with the importance of prayer.

The Rev David Bidnell will lead the Methodist Church anniversary service at 10.45am next Sunday. The service will be followed by coffee and biscuits. Everyone welcome.
