WIND turbines were smashed to pieces as 70mph gales hit Huddersfield.

The blades were ripped off three windmills in Hepworth and Upper Cumberworth, with one of them being flung across a road. A fourth turbine was also damaged at Holmfirth.

Last night, investigations were under way to determine why the turbines were so badly damaged in the storms, which also saw more rainfall hit the town.

No-one was hurt but Hepworth residents were concerned that the turbine is so close to a busy road.
