Sign up to Slawit says councillor

A COUNCILLOR wants the name 'Slawit' added to the signage at Slaithwaite Station. Northern Rail announcements already refer to ‘Slawit’ rather than Slaithwaite – but Clr Paul Salveson wants the name immortalised in lettering too. Speaking in the wake of 30th anniversary celebrations for Slaithwaite station, Clr Salveson (Lab, Golcar) said local identity was very important. “Northern Rail use Slawit on announcements and rarely pronounce the stop as Slaithwaite,” he said. “Yet that is lost on the signage. Just as Welsh signage provides both the Welsh and English name, perhaps the signage could have Slaithwaite and Slawit written on it. This is just one example of localism that needs to be preserved.”
