CRIME in our area has significantly decreased since last year.

And Huddersfield South Neighbourhood Police Team, pictured, have put the reduction down to “hard work” and “increased public involvement”.

Some 741 crimes were reported for February last year and 754 in March. For the same months this year, the figures are down to 619 and 668.

Acting Inspector Chris Sheard of the Huddersfield South NPT said: "Our figures show that crime in the Huddersfield South NPT area has fallen for the start of the year and this is obviously great news. Such reductions in crime are down to the hard work of all of the officers who work in the Huddersfield South area, but also a result of the increased public involvement in our initiatives and operations.

"Through our community meetings, social media outlets and work on the streets, public information on crime concerns helps us to set the Police agenda for each specific area in Kirklees."

Huddersfield South NPT which covers Almondbury, Crosland Moor, Dalton, Huddersfield Town Centre, Kirkheaton, Lepton, Moldgreen, Netherton, Newsome and Rawthorpe holds regular ward meetings to speak to the community about problem spots.

The next Dalton Ward Community meeting will take place at 7pm on Wednesday,May 2. This will be at Cottage Homes located off Cross Green Road at Waterloo. Current priority areas identified by the team include Kilner Bank, Dalton and Gallagher Retail Park, Waterloo.
