Children in Deighton are getting a helping hand with their reading thanks to the National Literacy Trust and Huddersfield WH Smith.

Christ Church Academy in Deighton has been supported by the scheme, which aims to promote reading for pleasure among children living in deprived areas of the country.

Primary teacher and librarian Sally Kerry said: “Being in this scheme has been a wonderful opportunity to promote reading and book ownership for some children who have never been given a book before.”

The programme provides “book parties” for children aged six to nine years old where children can choose their own book to keep.

And to mark the end of the school term children visited WH Smith in Huddersfield to be given £7 each to spend on a book of their own.

The school report produced for the governors showed that the books would have cost £1,500.
