A FAMILY has set themselves a summer of tough fundraising challenges to boost cancer research.
Team Washington, aka, Denby Dale couple, Mike and Sue Washington and their son Andrew, hope to raise £1,000 for Yorkshire Cancer Research.
The trio have already taken part in the Jane Tomlinson Run for All Leeds 10k, which took place on July 8, and will run again in the Jane Tomlinson Run for All York event this Sunday.
Mike, 61, and Andrew, 23, will then complete the Holme Valley Mountain Bike Challenge on Sunday September 9, which involves cycling 30 miles through demanding off-road terrain and local roads and lanes.
Mike has taken part in the event for the past five or six years and Andrew for the past three, so they will be aiming to beat their best times of four hours five minutes and three hours 23 minutes respectively.
A week after the cycling challenge, Sue, 56, and Andrew will take part in the Great North Run, a half marathon from Newcastle to South Shields.
Sue, who took part in the event in 2010 with Mike for Yorkshire Cancer Research, is hoping to complete the 13.2 miles in less than two hours 30 minutes, while Andrew, who will be taking part for the first time, is hoping to beat a time of two hours.
Mike said: “We love taking part in challenges as motivation to keep fit and keep the weight off.
“Sue’s father and my mother both died of cancer, and as Yorkshire Cancer Research is a Yorkshire charity we decided to work together to raise as much as possible for them.
“We will be training by occasionally going to the gym and completing a five mile run at least once a week, but mainly by taking regular walks with the dog!”
Emma Young, head of events at Yorkshire Cancer Research, said: “We would like to say a huge thank you to ‘Team Washington’ for their fundraising efforts and we wish them the best of luck in their challenges.
“Without the support of our events participants we wouldn’t be able to fund so many vital research projects throughout Yorkshire.”
