MEMBERS at Denby Dale Tennis Club are eagerly looking forward to the 2013 season.

Their old shale-covered tennis courts have been replaced with a brand new state-of-the-art surface, thanks to a host of grants.

The club has received cash from Kirklees Council and Sport England with additional support from Denby Dale Parish Council and the Huddersfield Common Good Trust.

Kirklees Council’s investment was matched by Sport England through their Inspired Facilities Fund as part of the legacy of the London Olympics.

Although only involving two courts, the project has been challenging.

All of the materials and equipment had to be lifted over the River Dearne by crane and the unusually wet weather made site work difficult.

The new carpet surface plays like a clay court and is laid over SudsSports plastic box sections which were originally used under the London 2012 Olympic Equestrian Arena in Greenwich. SudsSports units allow water to pass through and under the courts should flooding occur.

New floodlighting and perimeter fencing has also been provided.

The club hopes that the year-round playability and much improved courts will attract new members.

Club chairman, Les Simister said: “We were delighted to secure this funding as it has enabled us to upgrade our facilities.

“The playing and coaching seasons will be extended for all our members, young and old.

“Last year more than 60 youngsters were coached at the club and six junior and adult teams competed in the Huddersfield tennis leagues.

“The new developments will become a first class Olympic legacy for the Denby Dale community.”

There is still a lot of work that members themselves will have to do around the courts before they can be opened for general play, in particular a planting scheme of native species along the river bank and a new path to the clubhouse.

This should be completed in the next three or four weeks and the courts will then be available for all members and prospective members to play on.

The new courts will be officially opened on Sunday, May 19 and the postponed 2012 Finals will be played on that day.
