STEVE Robinson and Phil Hewlett wanted to know the name of the West Indian club opposite The Bin on Venn Street in the 1970s.

Richard Morelli of Oakes says, “It was Cleopatra's or Cleo's for short. It was around the corner from the popular West Indian pub The Palm Springs which is now The Parish.

“If it was called anything before this then I am too young to remember.”

Ken Lowe agrees and so does Debbie – who's email signature is Sexydebs – although her line of reasoning was somewhat inspired.

She couldn't remember the name of the club but did recall it was the same as a lap dancing bar on Chapel Hill.

She Googled lap dancing bars and came up with Cleopatra's.

“I thought my method of tracing the name would amuse you,” says Debbie, and adds a couple of kisses.

It does amuse me, Debbie. And thanks for the kisses.

Mick Hill, however, says, “It was the Huddersfield West Indian Association on Venn Street. No draught beer, but cans, bottles and plenty of good music.”

I think it probably was as Mick suggests, and then became Cleo's.

Whatever its name, it was a great club.
