MANY thanks for the get well messages and cards, both postal and email. I'm cutting down on the painkillers and beginning to feel more normal.

Stephen Pickup said, “I'm pleased to hear that all has gone well. I had a head scan when I had to go into hospital. But they didn't find anything in there. I could have told them that before they started.”

And Stewart Gledhill of Golcar said, “Your photo in HRI brought to mind the old TV programme Only When I Laugh, from the 70s and 80s, with James Bolam, Peter Bowles and Richard Wilson.”

Ah yes, I remember it well. Except there are not quite so many laughs in a real hospital.

“A number of years ago, I took my elderly mother to visit her brother who had just had an operation in HRI. During a lull in the conversation, she suddenly said to him that his doctor must be Irish. To be fair, her eyesight wasn't very good.

“We said what makes you say that and she said it says so, over the bed: Neil O'Reilly. What it actually said was Nil Orally. I think Ronnie Barker would have liked that one.”
