FLOOD victims in Denby Dale district will be able to fight off any future water disasters with an novel hi-tech defence system.

Eligible residents were invited to a demonstration of a new type of flat-pack sandbag along with the Denby Dale ward councillors.

Produced by Milnsbridge-based Environmental Defence Systems, the Floodsax bags are just 0.2kg when dry. But when soaked in water the semi-porous inner liner containing hundreds of absorbent crystals inflate the bag within three minutes.

The Denby Dale Area Committee chairman, Clr Elaine Ward, who attended the demonstration in Scissett Working Men’s Club with fellow Denby Dale ward councillors Jim Dodds and John Cook, said she had been impressed by what she saw.

“We’ve given them away to the 51 residents who claimed flood compensation from the council,” she added.

“They’ve all got a box of 20 which are there on hand for people to use straight away. They’re ideal for the disabled and the elderly because they’re so light.”

And Clr Ward advised residents that there was still time to claim compensation if evidence of flooding to their property could be provided.
