A COMMUNITY group for the elderly has struck gold with its members after hosting a week long mini Olympics.

Six members of the Elderberry Club, with ages totalling 533 came out tops in the club’s ‘Mini Olympics’ event last week.

These gallant half dozen, pictured, overcame the odds to come top in archery (darts), table tennis (roller ball), shot putt (putting), 100 metre dash (roll the 2p coin), Olympic Rings (bagatelle) and curling.

The annual ‘Holiday @ Home’ week also included a flower arranging demonstration with afternoon tea, a Diamond Jubilee Party, a meal out at the Eating Inn followed by a canal trip with Anchor Trust.

A celebratory service was attended by Paul Kern, manager at Br4adley Court Methodist Home, as the guest speaker.

A spokesman said: “This is the fourth year of the Elderberry Club and we feel to be really established in the local areas of Birkby, Fartown, Cowcliffe and Bradley.

“We meet once a month and the ‘Holiday @ Home’ week in June is the highlight of the year. Everyone was more than ready for the lovely tea and cakes.”

The club, which is run by a committee from Cowcliffe Methodist Chapel, Fartown Trinity Church and Bradley Court Methodist Home, is to reach out to the social needs of the elderly.
