WE all pride ourselves on being green, and doing our bit for the environment.
And certainly one of the biggest and most successful green projects in recent years has been the introduction of a glass recycling scheme across Huddersfield and the rest of Kirklees.
Thousands of us diligently wash out our wine bottles, beer bottles, coffee jars and jam jars and put them in the boxes collected each month.
Now, sadly, that scheme is likely to end - a victim of the swingeing financial cutbacks facing Kirklees Council.
The council has to juggle its finances to live within new budget constraints imposed on them by the Government. And it seems the kerbside glass collection is to be one of the casualties of that system. It is a great shame as so many people have tried to be green in the easiest of manners; putting bottles in a box on the doorstep.
The council hopes to carry on the good recycling work by installing many more bottle banks at central locations in the near future. Let us hope people continue to make the effort to help by walking that little bit further.
