THIS picture of what now turns out to be of three generations of the Holme Valley Smith and Haigh families appeared last week in Family History and caused a bit of a stir.

The picture itself travelled all the way from Melbourne, Australia, from Colin Smith, who wants to track down his Holmfirth ancestors.

Several people rang in with information – one who recognised herself on the line-up, and others who recognised relatives.

Colin’s father was also called Colin.

The picture was taken on Colin Snr’s and Edna Smith’s golden wedding celebration.

The location is outside Deanhouse Chapel, Netherthong, where Colin and Edna were caretakers for several years.

John and Edna sit side by side on the front row. Brenda Hayworth, nee Hellawell, says she is the girl on Edna Smith’s left.

The Haigh family has at least four members on the photo.

Standing next to John Smith is his grand-daughter Jessica, or Jessie, who later married Cyril Haigh, who is sixth from the left, his face partly hidden.

Cyril’s dark-haired sister Kathleen is standing next to him, and their mother – first name not known – is second from the left in the group.

Their father Luther is standing at the back, next to Kathleen.

Celia Fox recognised her late sister Jean Woodhead (nee Kippax), one of Kathleen’s friends, at the far right of the picture.

She recalls that the Haigh family lived at Cliffe Road, Holmfirth from about 1938.

Rebecca McManus emails from Canada at the start of a journey to contact relatives of her grandparents John and Bretha McManus, who lived in Huddersfield.

They emigrated to Canada with Rebecca’s father, also called John, but widely known as Patrick.

Patrick/John has been born and raised in Huddersfield, and accompanied his parents to Canada while in his early 20s.

“I am doing a family tree for my dad and would like to know where I can find information on my family from Huddersfield,” said Rebecca.

“I know I still have some family living there but as they would be in their 90s or older, I'm not sure where or who to go to, to find anything.”
