THE old Fartown sports ground has been long gone now.

It’s hard to imagine from its present appearance that this was once the venue for county cricket and professional rugby league matches.

Crowds in their thousands used to flock here to cheer on their heroes at play.

It is simply because of these treasured memories that Fartown holds a special place in the hearts of many of Huddersfield’s sporting faithful.

They will be saddened to know that a petition to wind-up the long-standing Huddersfield Cricket and Athletic Club has been submitted and will be heard on December 11, as we report in the Examiner today.

The distinctive pavilion which remains at Fartown is the one tangible sign of the glory days of old.

It would be sad to many if it disappeared as a result of next month’s court proceedings.
