I CANNOT understand how John Mooney and his family can overfill a grey bin in just two weeks (Mailbag April 17).

I am in a family of three and still on weekly collections and I only leave my bin out every three weeks with room to spare. I have got three green bins {since Christmas, 2006} and I always need to put all three out.

I have no worries about rats, foxes or maggots because most of my foodstuff – apple cores etc – go in one of my compost bins. I would love a glass collection instead of walking to the nearest bottle bank with a suitcase full of coffee, jam and other jars.

The Mooney family needs to learn how to reduce, re-use and recycle, then it would not have a problem.
