Firefighters spent almost three hours tackling a blaze in a farmyard at Emley.

Thick, black smoke from the fire could be seen for miles around.

Four fire engines from Huddersfield, Skelmanthorpe and Mirfield were called to the farm off Stringer House Lane at 10.16am.

A fire brigade spokesman said controlled burning of sillage got out of hand and spread to some tyres.

Fire crews pumped water from a nearby stream. No one was hurt.
