Holme Village Junior and Infant school was the base for the first ever Summer Wine Trails race.
The race, aptly titled ‘The School Run’, was a six-mile trail race and one of a two-part mini-series to be held in the Holme Valley in 2014.
Although there was only a small field of seven entrants in the children’s trail race and 30 in the senior event, the atmosphere created by all involved meant that this felt like a much larger and exciting spectacle than the numbers would suggest.
Mike Fanning set a winning time of 38.52, followed by James Nobles in 40.09 and in third Matthew Kelly in 44.26.
The first lady in fifth place overall was Jacqui Khoueiry, of Holmfirth Harriers, in a time of 45.01.
Race organiser Andrew Brentley said: “The race has received an overwhelmingly positive response from all involved due its friendly and supportive atmosphere offering all a chance to enjoy trail running on some wonderful trails never previously raced upon.
“We now look forward to the second race in the series to be held from Holme Bridge Church.
“This will be a 12km challenge on the opposite side of the valley where we hope Mike and Jacqui will return to attempt to take overall series crowns for 2014.
“We also hope to see more new and enthusiastic runners of all shapes and sizes taking part in what may be the first of many trail racing adventures.”
