HUDDERSFIELD’S mayor-that-never-was is pushing ahead with her fundraising efforts.

Christine Iredale had been in line to become Mayor of Kirklees in May after serving 12 months as deputy.

But the Lib Dem’s hopes were dashed when she lost her Golcar seat to Labour’s Paul Salveson in this year’s council elections.

Christine had planned to help the Alzheimer’s Society during her year in office – a move which would have brought tens of thousands of pounds to the good cause through dozens of fundraising events.

The Milnsbridge woman is still determined to raise money for the charity – even without the mayoral chain.

Christine has organised a quiz night in Golcar next month in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society.

“Losing the election was one of those things that you just have to get over. It was the will of the people,” she said. “This is my way of saying I’m still interested in helping the charity.

“It’s a disease that people don’t talk about but more and more people are getting Alzheimer’s as the population ages.”

Colne Valley Lib Dem Clr David Ridgway – who took over as mayor instead of Christine – will attend the quiz, which takes place at Golcar Royal British Legion from 7.45pm on Thursday, September 13.

She said: “I know David’s thoroughly enjoying himself as mayor and I’m glad he’s going to be there to support me.”

Entry to the quiz costs £5 per person with teams of up to six allowed. Christine has just finished the questions for September’s event. She said: “There will be rounds on sport, history, geography and TV.

“I’ve done the questions so that most people should get about 80% right and I hope people come along and have a good time.”

Christine plans to organise more fundraisers for the charity.

“I’m hoping to hold a coffee morning in Milnsbridge later in the year and possibly another event in the new year. I would like to raise a decent amount,” she added.
