RESIDENTS have been given extra help keeping safe on the roads this winter.

Huddersfield Area Committee has agreed funding to provide three extra grit bins in the Lindley area.

The new bins are now in place and ready for the next cold snap.

The funding was successfully negotiated by ward councillor Cahal Burke.

He took up the matter on behalf of residents who were without a grit bin near to their homes.

Clr Burke said: “I was approached by residents to look at the possibility of extra grit bins in a few areas.

“The grit is there for all residents to use on the public highway and pavements.”

The two bins for Fernlea Road in Lindley and Ridge View Drive in Birkby will cost £1,300 each over five years.

The third bin on Belton Grove in Birchencliffe has been funded for three years at a cost of £900.

The funding will cover the cost of purchasing the bins and their installation, as well as maintenance and refilling the grit bins.

Once this period is complete, additional funding will be sought to continue their maintenance.

Clr Burke added: “I urge people to use the grit considerately and to stick to applying it in these areas only.

“That way the grit will last and there will be enough to do the job when it is needed.”
