THE NHS never ceases to amaze us and the story about Mirfield 21-year-old Philippa Bradbury is another classic example.
She is one of just eight people to have been given ‘reconditioned’ lungs thanks to pioneering work at Newcastle’s famous Freeman Hospital.
And it means many other people may have life-saving transplants as currently only one in five lungs made available for transplants are judged in good enough condition to be used.
We are still world leaders at some things and this shows that high tech medical research at our universities is one of them, along with the supreme skill of NHS surgeons.
There is nothing more precious than giving someone their life back.
