A TEA PARTY marking the start of Fairtrade Fortnight was held at Holmfirth Co-op store.

Staff celebrated the switch of all Co-op own-brand tea to Fairtrade with a Mad Hatter’s tea party.

Shoppers found Alice in Wonderful, the March Hare and the Mad Hatter serving up the brews along with a plentiful supply of jammie dodgers and free samples of Fairtrade tea.

Holmfirth Co-op food store manager Steven Cooper said: “We don’t mind going a little mad if it helps to promote this tea-rrific initiative and encourage many more shoppers to support Fairtrade.”

Fairtrade Fortnight runs until Sunday March 9 and aims to raise the profile of Fairtrade mark products, which ensure a better deal for growers in developing countries by guaranteeing fair prices and an additional social premium to fund community projects.

The move on tea will benefit growers in some of the world’s poorest countries, including Malawi, which is producing Fairtrade tea for the first time.

The Co-operative is offering 20% off all Fairtrade products until Sunday March 9.
