DRUMMING superstars from Golcar “beat” their way to victory at the prestigious Mrs Sunderland Festival.

The St John’s School Year 5 students triumphed in the World Drumming category at last month’s competition in Huddersfield.

The group of 11, led by Eloise Kirk (pictured front right), have been playing the African drums since Year 3 and came home with the trophy after performing two pieces – Mozambique and Aruba.

The youngsters all play a Djembe type drum and play different rhythms, beats and solos.

Teacher Nicola Sanderson said her group were really proud of their win.

She said: “They were really excited to win because they’ve come second for the last two years when there’s only been three or four teams.

“This year there were nine schools because they changed it from African Drumming to World Drumming, so it was really nice to win – they were really, really proud.”

Ms Sanderson said her drumming stars had all really improved and they were now looking forward to their performance at Golcar Lily Day on Saturday, May 8.
