CHRISTIANS and Muslims spent a day discussing their religions in the Colne Valley.

The group visited St John’s Church and Colne Valley Museum in Golcar.

The event was organised by Golcar Together, which was formed after the racist murder of taxi driver Mohammed Parvaiz in the village in 2006.

The group brings together representatives of the main political parties and churches to combat racial prejudice.

Fakhara Rehman of Kirklees Faiths Forum took part in the get-together.

“The event provided an opportunity for friendships to be created across the faith and culture divide whilst also celebrating our commonalities and differences,” she said.Š

“It is important to recognise that faith is an important part of local peoples lives and how effective we can be if we work cooperatively for the benefit of all Kirklees communities.”

As a result of the visit, the Muslim participants decided to donate parcels once a week to the Welcome Centre at the Methodist Mission in Huddersfield.

The organisation offers food, toiletries, bedding, household items and warm clothes to people in crisis.
