Under 14 Cup

Huddersfield St Joseph’s Sharks 16 Slaithwaite Saracens 14

FROM the start this looked a tough match to call and neither side gave any ground in defence.

The Sharks were within striking distance a number of times, but the Slaithwaite line went unbroken to half time. As they approached half time Slaithwaite broke to score down their left wing, and charged over from close range to see them in the lead 12-0.

Sharks came out for the second half with a fresh determination and with a try each from Tyler Davies and Aiden Fairs – both converted by Jakob Garside – to make it 12-12 at full time.

The game went into extra time of five minutes each way.

Both teams converted a penalty and it was 14-14, so the match went to ‘golden point’.

Slaithwaite made a mistake and gave a penalty away just short of the halfway line. It was a long kick, but Garside launched the ball with his right foot, the ball took an eternity to go over the bar and clinch a win for the Sharks.

MOM: Tom Beaumont, top tackler Jordan Ghani, top driver Sam Whitworth; most improved Matthew Armitage.
