They were great days and they can never come back - but at least we can reminisce about them.

Graham Smith and Debra Senior organised a superb evening with a Stile Common School reunion featuring many of the old pupils and staff covering the years 1976-89, who turned up on September 12 at Longley Park Golf Club.

And the highlight undoubtedly was one of the great teachers, Tony Cooke attending – all the way from Cornwall.

The event was sponsored by Mike Andy Entertainments who provided audio visuals and entertainment.

One of Mr Cooke’s former pupils, Dean Robert Noble, said: “It was a pleasure and an honour, sir, to meet you again after all this time.

“We all must number hundreds yet you knew each and every one of us. Amazing.”

Hazel Rodinson said: “I would like to thank Graham Christian Smith and Debra Senior Ladlow for organising the most brilliant night ever, seeing so many people haven’t seen since school and main man, the best teacher ever, Mr Cooke.

“He still calls me Purple Haze! Love it! My best memories of my childhood and music brought back memories of our school disco.”

Salvatore Cremona added: “It was fantastic. Don’t think that night will ever be bettered.

“Fantastic turn out for a fantastic and obviously well-respected teacher Mr Cooke.”

Vicki Howard, said: “Fab night! What a great turnout for the ledgend that is Tony Cooke.

“Well done to all who helped organise such a fitting tribute.”

Tony Lunn said: “Gosh am I still tired from an awesome night of memories!

“Just goes to show teaching isn’t for exams, it’s for life.

“I hope Mr Cooke understands that last night was our payback for being instrumental in shaping those young impressionable minds and doing a darn good job.

“I found my homework sir, and I’ll bring it in on Monday - honest...”

Mr Cooke said: “Yes, home at last in Cornwall.

“I would just like to thank once again Debra and Graham and all my wonderful ex-pupils who came to the Great Stile Common reunion (‘Cookie has-been’) and greeted me so wonderfully well.

“Thank you all for the cards, presents and especially the very kind words which really touched my heart.

“My head may be in Cornwall but a large part of my heart is at Stile Common.

“Again, on behalf of my wife and family, thanks to you all for a wonderful, memorable evening.”
