T’S a date when thousands will pack into the streets of London to glimpse a world class athlete.

But people in Huddersfield are being urged to make July 29 a date to head down to Greenhead Park for a day of more refined frivolities.

Crowds will be flocking to the site, picnic hamper in begloved hand, to take part in the second annual Hullabaloo.

The event aims to give locals the chance to break out their best china and their finest Sunday gladrags. And as fans will be cheering on the Olympic cycling road race, there will be some alternative sports on offer.

The event has been organised by the town’s Tea and Tarts WI and a team from the park and is being staged as part of Love Parks Week, which celebrates the heritage and future of parks across the UK.

Entertainment on the day runs between 11am and 3pm. One of the highlights will be the ShambOlympics, including more genteel activities like G&T Relay and Lady Hurdles.

Teams of four and families can enter and their efforts will be accompanied by the Byram Street Brass.

Other fun activities will include The Attack of the Massive Snacks, a competition last year won by a metre-long Crunchie, How Psychic Are You? and The Strangest Thing You Will Ever See. There will be lawn games, a traditional fete, craft stalls, deckchairs to hire and bunting to admire.

The day will also see the announcement of the winners of the Making Huddersfield Fun Awards, celebrating people who go the extra mile to make Huddersfield a happy place to live.

Many of the activities are free and have been made possible by volunteers and local and regional businesses.

The WI’s president Rebecca Kilner helped organise the day.

The group, which meets at Huddersfield Town Hall, aims to introduce women of all ages to traditional and not so traditional skills.

Rebecca said: "Plans for the Hullabaloo are storming ahead – we are hoping that the reservation we made for good weather will be honoured! We’re getting such generous support from so many local independent businesses it is quite heartwarming.

"We are all very excited about putting on our Sunday finery and heading out to the park for the fun and games.

"The Hullabaloo is very much the piece de resistance for Love Parks Week and that shows in the all the support we have had from Chris Smith, Greenhead Park’s activities officer.

"We feel very lucky to have such a fabulous park in which to hold our knees-up and we want everyone to come and join the fun".
