Greetland Academy were champions at a netball festival attended by a top netballer.
Joanne Walker, one of England and Wales’ leading netballers, gave advice to the sporty children attending.
Hundreds of schoolchildren from across Calderdale took part in the annual St Joseph’s School Invitational Soccer and Netball Festival for girls and boys aged between seven and 11.
Joanne, 24, a former England international who currently plays at Goal Shooter for the Yorkshire Jets, signed autographs and spoke to many of those taking part in the event.
She said: “I really enjoyed joining the dozens of girls who were taking part in the Netball competition and watching some of the games take place.
“I am hugely passionate about encouraging young people to take up, enjoy and continue playing the sport and this was a brilliantly organised and inspirational competition to be a part of.”
The Netball tournament was won by The Greetland Academy with the Fair Play Trophy going to Woodhouse Primary School.
The Football tournament’s winners were: Year 6 – Longroyde Junior School; Year 5 – Longroyde Junior School; Year 4 – St John’s Primary Academy; Year 3 – Woodhouse Primary School.
The overall winners of the Festival were The Greetland Academy.
The Festival is organised by St Joseph’s School Staff and Parent Teacher Social Committee. School Headteacher Mary Hodges said: “We are hugely proud of our Soccer and Netball Festival and would like to thank everyone who was involved in making it a success – from the parents and staff who spent the night before setting up, to the officials who made it run so smoothly on the day and the teams from schools across Calderdale who took part.
“We would also like to thank Joanne Walker for joining us for the event.
“It was great to have someone of Jo’s standing join us and I am sure she has inspired some of the girls to want to be the Netball Superleague stars of the future,” she said.
