ANOTHER day, another cannabis farm uncovered.

The rate of homes turned over to the cultivation of pot is now growing with alarming regularity.

We report on the latest discovery today, where police uncovered a sophisticated hash factory in Wellington Street, Oakes.

Our town is not alone in experiencing the phenomenon of these illicit operations – suburban homes have been turned into cottage industries for cannabis gangs across the country.

Many have been linked to Vietnamese or other Far East organised gangs trying to take hold of the cannabis market.

Some have considered large-scale cannabis cultivation as an almost ‘victimless crime’, but the grim reality is that drugs kill people and the dealers who ply this evil trade are no better than murderers.

Not only is the money from cannabis cultivation ploughed into serious crime, but the bypassing of the electricity needed to run the factories causes risk of fire and electrocution.
