A DEIGHTON nurse has been rewarded for her contribution to health care.

Jaswinder Takhar, who works on ward 15 at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary, was given the Nurse Hero award, which was voted for by patients.

The 23-year-old said: “I am so grateful and happy to have won this award. I’ve done ward 15 proud.”

Community midwife Debbie Coward, who works in the area as the Calder team leader took home the Inspirational Nurse or Midwife Award.

Debbie, of Hebden Bridge, said: “It is nice to think that you inspire people and that they have voted for you.”

The awards were given out as part of a week long celebration of International Day of the Midwife and Nurses’ Day.

Director of nursing at the Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust, Helen Thomson said: “This has been a really good week celebrating the best of nursing and midwifery.

“I am extremely proud of these two award winners and of the huge contributions all our nurses and midwives make.”

Nurses Day, which was celebrated on May 12 – was the birth date of Florence Nightingale, who is recognised as the founder of modern nursing.
