I AGREE totally with “Fed up private nursery provider” (Mailbag February 26). Yes, it is a shame about Cambridge Road nursery (and the others), but it is typical of what the trend is at the moment.

However, it is not just private day nurseries which are suffering. Pre-schools and playgroups are dying out for many reasons, such as the children’s centres, and also the fact that schools take children the term after he or she turns three. So the valuable funding available to all three-year-olds is going to schools, and not the self funded playgroups.

While the children’s centres are a good idea they are robbing the local playgroups and private nurseries of local children, because they are a cheaper option for childcare and can offer longer sessions.

I would urge parents to check out all options available to them locally, and consider utilising self-funded groups, or day nurseries, as they are a dying breed and if they don’t get used they will be gone and the local community will suffer.
