Mr David Carrins, of Gideons International, led worship at the Methodist Church when the reader was Mrs Jan Gaunt. The pianist was Mrs Eileen Littlewood.

Parish communion at St George’s Church was celebrated by the Rev Jenny Barnes, who spoke about Mary Magdelene, whose life was remembered. Sue Clay read the lesson and Elizabeth Mosley was the server. The organist was Verena Wood.

A planning meeting was held on Tuesday for a children's Olympics-themed activities afternoon to be staged on August 29. The meeting was chaired by Margaret Cullen.

The Rev Geoff Bamford led midweek Holy Communion at St David’s Church when lessons were read by Ian Gold. The Monkey Business group held its summer outing to Kirklees Light Railway. The free lunch and Over 60s Club were also held. Friday evening prayers were led by Carolyn Burley.

Parish Eucharist on Sunday at St David's Church was conducted by the Rev Nick Heaton when lessons were read by Dale Woods and Sally Darley. Intercessions were led by Ian Gold and the chalice was administered by Ian Macdonald. The organist was Eddie Purcell.

At a meeting of the Probus Club in the community centre, members stood and observed a silence in memory of chairman Jim Taylor, who died recently. Vice-chairman Alex Wallace agreed to take on the role of chairman and introduced Chris Freeman, who gave a talk entitled ‘There's More to Tenerife Than Playa de Las Americas’. Mr Freeman presented an informative and interesting talk illustrated by slides dealing with the volcanic landscape of Tenerife and the human background to its pre-Spanish people. Les Hobson proposed the vote of thanks.

The Rev Jenny Barnes celebrated parish Eucharist at St Mary’s Church and preached on the subject of Mary Magdalene. Fiona Kaye read the lesson and Carol Hirst led intercessions. The organist was Michael Clarke.

All Age Sunday morning worship at Scholes Methodist Church on July 15 was led by the Rev Tim Moore and included the baptism of Stanley David Hall. Amy Booth presented a candle to the parents of the baptised baby. Worshippers were welcomed by Barbara and Phillip Horn and Julia Noble played the organ. Margaret Thompson read from John 10 v 11 -15. The children worked on some activities to illustrate the ‘I am’ sayings. Refreshments were served by John and Sylvia Parker and Rebecca Haigh.

The Tuesday morning prayer breakfast was held at the home of Pat and Les Hopkins. On Saturday evening, a BBQ organised by Tim Cock and Bill and Carol Brown was held in the church grounds. Proceeds were for church funds.

Holy communion on Sunday at St John’s Church was celebrated by the Rev Di Ellerton, who preached the sermon and was celebrant. The readers were Sarah Drummond and Bill Brown, who also assisted with the chalice. The organist was Ian Greenhalgh and refreshments were served afterwards by Sue Dawson.

On July 7 and 8 Wilshaw Village Hall celebrated its 30th anniversary. The hall was open from 11am until 5pm on both days with displays put on by all the groups that meet in the hall each week. There were photographs, certificates and trophies from the Valley Flutes and the Table Tennis Club. There were re-upholstered chairs in various stages of work from the Soft Furnishing class. A lovely patch-work quilt from the sewing class and plenty of beautiful examples of calligraphy and flower arranging. On Saturday afternoon visitors enjoyed a concert given by Valley Flutes and on Sunday afternoon visitors had the chance to have a game of table tennis. Refreshments were served and our thanks go to our contributors and those who acted as stewards on the weekend.

On Sunday, July 8 the church welcomed Billy Fielding into its church family at his baptism. Rev Judy Kenworthy led the service and Billy’s parents, Richard and Sally, chose the hymns for the service. God-parents were Bryony Blazeby and Martin and Rachael Murphy. Martin read the lesson and the children were involved in helping Rev Judy with the talk. Happy Birthday was sungto Billy who celebrated his first birthday the previous day. There was no service on Sunday, July 15 at St Mary’s as the congregation shared in the service at St Bartholomew’s in Meltham to celebrated Meltham Memories Weekend.
