BROCKHOLES

Parish communion to mark a week of prayer for Christian  community was celebrated at St George’s Church by the Rev  David Barnes. Members of Brockholes Methodist Church  joined the worshippers at St George's Church. The vicar  spoke about the Kingdom of God and how important it is to  share faith with others. Rosalind Watt read the lesson and the  server was Roger Kenworthy. Verena Wood was the  organist.

HOLMBRIDGE

Members of the Camera Club enjoyed a lecture by Barry  Payling on Wild Britain.
Midweek Holy Communion at St David’s Church was led by  the Rev Nick Heaton when Ian Gold read the lesson. The  service was followed by the Monkey Business group and the  free lunch and over 60s club. The Tumble Tots met during the  week. Friday evening prayers were led by Carolyn Burley.
Parish Eucharist at St David’s Church was conducted by the  Rev Geoff Bamford when lessons were read by Peggy  Whiteley and Judith Roberts. Ian Gold led intercessions and  the chalice was administered by Dorothy Parker. Helen Milner  and Judith Roberts led the crèche and junior church. The  organist was Chris Cook.

HOLMFIRTH

The third Sunday of Epiphany was celebrated at Holy Trinity  Church with Holy Communion at 8am according to the Book of  Common Prayer. Val Clarke was the celebrant and the lesson  was read by Anita Womersley. At 10.30 am the Rev Sean  Robertshaw led the Eucharist. Chris Headley read the lesson  from St Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, Noel Clarke was  the organist, Roger Pullen led the intercessions and Brian  Shaw assisted with the chalice. Sidesmen were Keith and  Barbara Jones and Alan and Vicky Winpenny served coffee  after the service, when all sang Happy Birthday to Doreen  Hinchliffe who celebrated her birthday yesterday, Friday.

HONLEY

Members of the Probus Club welcomed new member Leslie  Hanson and congratulated Alan Hirst, who was providing  coffee in celebration of his 80th birthday. Acting chairman Bill  Sewell introduced speaker Judith Kaye, who gave an  entertaining talk about strange laws around the world. She  told how many of the unusual laws have been on statute books  for many years, but have never been repealed. John Ambler  proposed the vote of thanks.
Parish Eucharist at St Mary’s Church was celebrated by the  Rev David Barnes. Jane Wardman read the lesson and Clive  Waind led intercessions. The organist was Jean Chadwick.

SCHOLES

 On Sunday December 19 the preacher Neil Ward welcomed  everyone to The Nativity presented by the Sunday School  scholars, Amy Christa, Lorna, George, Harvey, Jamie, Annie,  Oliver, Jake, Thea, Abby and Louis . Carol Quarmby  accompanied the children on the piano. The service continued  led by Neil and coffee and biscuits were served by Margaret  Hill. In the evening Rev Tim Moore led the service of Carols by  Candlelight poems and bible readings. Hazel Moore sang the  solo Mary Have You Heard? and coffee and mince pies were  served by the Ladies’ group. On Tuesday morning of  December 21 the now very regular coffee morning involving  the Year 6 children of Scholes J and I school was held . Coffee  was served to a full house and the children entertained  everyone to a rendering of While Shepherds Watched and to  a dance routine.Another coffee morning was  on January 18.
On Sunday (January 23) at the Methodist Church, the  preacher Robert Booth looked at the theme of The Calling Of  The First Disciple. June Snow read the Bible passages   from  Matthew, chapter 4 and Isaiah, chapter 9 relating to this. The  congregation were welcomed at the door by Phillip Horn and  Norman Kelly. The organist was Barbara Horn and coffee was  served by Betty and Eric Chilvers and Michelle Booth.
On Friday evening  January 21 as part of the Methodist  Church’s 150th anniversary celebration a very successful   Cracker Quiz event was held. The building was full to capacity  with 15 teams taking part. Questions were set by Richard  Green from Rothwell involving all  members of the village of  Scholes.The Football team, British Legion, Scholes Junior and  Infant school  governors and teachers, village ladies  and  members of the church enjoyed a meat and tatty pie supper  after nine rounds of questions . The winners, Gramps and  Grans, were presented with a huge hamper of Yorkshire food.  The booby prize was a box of Christmas crackers – not saying  who won that. The next anniversary next event is a Ladies’  Pamper Evening on Friday February 25. Tickets, priced £5 can  be obtained by telephoning 01484 684934 or 01484  682340.

UPPERTHONG

The prayer breakfast on Tuesday was held at the home of  the Hopkins family.
Family Eucharist at St John’s Church was conducted by the  Rev Di Ellerton, who was also the celebrant. The readers were  David Steele and Karen Beattie. Les Hopkins read the gospel  and preached the sermon. Karen Beattie led prayers and Bill  Brown assisted with the chalice. Adam Greenhalgh played the  organ. Coffee and biscuits were served afterwards by Ruth  Schorah.

WOOLDALE

Morning worship at the Methodist Church was led by the Rev  Charlotte Lorimer, who preached on Christian unity. Sue  Ogden was the organist.
The monthly women’s fellowship meeting took the form of a  New Year’s party and games. Lynne Parker proposed the vote  of thanks.
