BROCKHOLES

Worship at the Methodist Church was led by Granville Dews. Mr and Mrs Paul and Janet Grant were the readers and Paul Jackson played the guitar. The organist was Keith Garside.

David Wyles chaired a meeting of Brockholes Village Trust and welcomed gardening expert Joe Maiden to the village hall. Mr Maiden gave an amusing talk and advice on gardening matters which was enjoyed by the audience. Tea and cakes were served by members of the committee and helpers.

Family communion at St George’s Church was celebrated by the Rev David Barnes, who spoke about Bearing Fruit. Elizabeth Mosley read the lesson and Roger Kenworthy was the server. Music was provided by the music group and Verena Wood played the organ.

HOLMFIRTH

The Third Sunday of Lent was celebrated at Holy Trinity Church, Holmfirth with the 10.30am Parish Eucharist service led by Rev Keith Griffin. Linda Whittaker read the Gospel reading from Luke 13 (vv 1-9). Brian Shaw led the Intercessions and Sue Winter assisted with the chalice. John and Sue Winter acted as sidesmen and coffee was served by Ann Holmes in the Gallery Room after the service. Tomorrow, which is Mothering Sunday, will feature a Communion service at 8.30 am and Mothering Sunday Service at 10.30am.

Family Worship at the Methodist Church on Sunday morning was led by John Mason, who was assisted by Barbara Rochester and her worship team. The Lenten cross was used to trace the events leading to the crucifixion of Jesus. This week the congregation remembered that Jesus was betrayed by Judas, one of his disciples, and they hung a purse on the Lenten Cross to represent that event. John Mason drew attention to the qualities we admire in people we look up to and reminded everyone that qualities shown by Jesus such as gentleness, humility, compassion and sensitivity to people are truly heroic. The Lent course has continued on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm. The theme this year is Hope in God’s Future – Climate Change, an Ecumenical Report and participants have been challenged by stimulating and thought-provoking study leaders. The final meeting on Tuesday March 16 at 7.30pm will be led by Michael Tolson.

HONLEY

Geoff Budd was speaker at a meeting of the Probus Club in the community hall. His talk, illustrated by slides, was entitled Fares Please and dealt with the unusual subject of bus tickets from their introduction by the London Omnibus Company to the present day. The entertaining talk was accompanied by examples of ticket machines from Mr Budd’s personal collection. Bill Sewell proposed the vote of thanks.

The family service at St Mary’s Church was led by the Rev David Barnes. Simon Crook read the lesson and singing was led by the music group. On Sunday evening, the Rev David Barnes celebrated parish Eucharist. John Ambler read the lesson and intercessions were led by Pat Green. The organist was Jean Chadwick.

UPPERTHONG

On Monday evening, the Lent group met at the home of the Rev Di Ellerton . A further group met on Wednesday at the home of Graham Dawson. The weekly prayer breakfast was also held at the Dawson home.

On Thursday, the Rev Keith Griffin led the communion service at St John’s Church. A Lent lunch followed in the meeting room. During the afternoon, members of the Mothers' Union groups from St John's Church and All Saints’ Church, Netherthong, met at Upperthong.

Early communion on Sunday at St John’s Church was conducted by the Rev Di Ellerton. She also led the family service when the speaker was Capt Mike Smithers, of the Church Army. The reader was Val Shuttleworth and the organist was Adam Greenhalgh.

WOOLDALE

The Rev Laura Hardy led the Sunday service at the Methodist Church and preached on the theme of Water. The organist was Nigel Morris.
