HOLMFIRTH

A weekend of celebration was held at Holmfirth Methodist Church to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the publication of the King James’ Bible. The celebration, under the banner of Biblefresh, entailed the reading of the New Testament by volunteers reading 15-minute sessions, daily, over three days. Favourite Bible verses were also written out by some members and these formed part of a display containing Bibles old and new along with children’s Bible stories.

Sunday morning worship was led by Kath Beetlestone, containing the Biblefresh theme. The children and young people heard a story of how Mary Jones, a young girl from Wales 200 years ago, saved up for six years and then walked 25 miles in her bare feet to buy a Bible. The young people presented a drama, based on the theme, and testimonies were given on the impact of verses of Scripture, on people’s lives, young and old. Reference was made to the importance of regular Bible reading, some members having undertaken to read the whole Bible, daily, over the year 2011. Members of the Worship Team contributed readings and prayers. The Chair sang a worship song on a biblical theme. Money raised over the weekend was donated to the Bible Society.

Noel Clarke played the organ and during communion the choir sang the hymn Through All the Changing Scenes of Life. After the service Sue Styring and Joyce Knight served coffee in Cafe 100. Next Sunday there will be a family service at 10.30am and on Wednesday, November 2, All Souls’ Day, there will be a service at 7.30pm to remember those who have died. All are welcome – particularly those who have lost a loved one.
