HOLME Valley Mountain Rescue Team (HVMRT) is calling on climbers to scramble together to raise cash for a new headquarters.

Faced with the closure of Marsden Fire Station, where the team are currently based, the team is urgently seeking funds to build a dedicated headquarters building in Robert Ashton Memorial Park, Meltham.

Permission for the new building was granted last year but HVMRT will have to meet the cost itself.

Therefore the team is hosting The Seven Summits Challenge, a sponsored climb at Huddersfield Sports Centre, Southgate, on January 27.

The Seven Summits Challenge event is open to any climber and particularly climbing clubs and other mountain rescue teams.

The event includes a competition to see who can climb the farthest and there’s a free T-shirt for each participant.

Huddersfield Sports Centre is also offering a week of free climbing for each person who takes part.

HVMRT spokesman Owen Phillips said: “This will be a relaxed and enjoyable event, and we’re hoping that members of the local climbing community can come out and support us.

“Mountain rescue services in the UK, unlike most other countries, are completely free of charge and are provided by unpaid volunteers – climbers and mountaineers who want to give something back and be there to assist others if they get into difficulty.”

Climbers should register at Huddersfield Sports Centre climbing wall by January 20.
