A book of shared memories around Holme Valley has been relaunched.

Pennine Landscapes was the culmination of the Holme Valley Sharing Memories project.

The project united the valley’s youngest and oldest citizens to discuss bygone days around Holmfirth and its surrounding villages.

The book, compiled over several months, includes photography, visual art and creative writing.

Sharing Memories worked with pupils from Holmfirth High School and Brockholes C of E J&I School as part of the project.

Cash raised from sales of the book will go towards creative and heritage projects in the area.

In addition to the book, the group produced a series of greeting cards and postcards, based on their drawings and paintings, which are also for sale.

Sharing Memories worked with professional artist David Quirke from Hebden Bridge, photographer Paula Solloway, from Skipton, and Holmfirth High School pupils taking photographs and producing paintings.

Leeds-based writer Mary Cooper was brought in to work on the project and incorporate the children from Brockholes School.

The resulting publication is a rich celebration of what it means to live and grow up in the Holme Valley over the past 100 years.

Visual artist Jan Benham, who works with the group, said: “Our group members are all in their 70s, 80s and 90s and everyone contributed an enormous amount of enthusiasm and commitment to this book.

“We went out into the Holme Valley visiting places and landmarks which have particular meaning to the participants and it was fascinating listening to all their stories.”

The book is available priced £9.99 from Waterstones, Kingsgate, Huddersfield or by calling Sally: 01484 683756 or emailing: sally-brown@btconnect.com.
