I REFER to your article of April 25 regarding the Compo statue being

‘back on track’.

The article refers to the year 2003 when, according to your source, ‘the statue could not go ahead because a suitable sculptor could not be found’.

This is not the case.

From day one we have always had the sculptor John Alder on board and the initial sum of money raised was based on John’s conceptual drawings of the Compo statue (pictured, inset).

What is correct in the article is that it is my wish to have John create the statue. In my opinion, having known my father, he is the only man to create Bill Owen/Compo.
